Dr. Charles W. Hailes, 82, of Nibley died Tuesday, February 6, 1996 near his home in an automobilepedestrian accident.
"Chick" was born May 18, 1913 in Salt Lake City, Utah a son of John Charles and Nellie Warrick Hailes. He attended schools in Salt Lake, graduating from South High School. From 1934 to 1935 Chick attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, where he played freshman football and basketball. He served a mission for the LDS Church in England from 1936-1938.When he returned to Salt Lake, he attended the Army Air Force Flying school. Upon graduation, Chick served during World War II as a bomber pilot stationed in Riverside, Calif., Tacoma, Wash., 25 months in the Alaskan Defense Command, and later Florida and California. He retired a Lt. Col. in the USAF.
After World War II, Chick earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from USU, his Ph.D. From Penn State, and did post doctoral work at Texas A&M. He joined the staff at USU in the Industrial and Technical Education Dept. College of Engineering in 1949.
He served as chairman of the Athletic Council for 15 years. Chick served as director of research for the state of Rhode Island for two years, and retired from USU in 1978. Chick married Winifred Davis of Salt Lake City in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on March 20, 1943.
They are the parents of Janet Wagenbach of Sparta, New Jersey, and J. Charles Hailes of Millville, Utah; they have eight grandchildren: Stacy, Andrea, Wendy, Amy and Jennifer Wagenbach,and Michael, Brian and Laura Hailes.
Funeral services will be held Monday, 2 p.m. at Nibley Ward Chapel. Friends may call at the Allen-Hall Mortuary in Logan, Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. and at the church one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the Millville Cemetery.
