DORAL-RYDER OPEN: Joe Ozaki got out early before the wind put some teeth back into the Blue Monster, and shot a 65 Friday to take the lead midway through the Doral-Ryder Open in Miami. Ozaki was one stroke ahead of Michael Bradley.

HEALTHCARE CLASSIC: Walter Morgan shot the best score on the seniors tour this year - an 8-under par 62 - to take a two-stroke lead Friday after the opening round of the Healthcare Classic at Ojai, Calif. Golfing great Gary Player and Jack Kiefer were tied at 64.

NUVEEN MASTERS: Johan Kriek defeated John McEnroe and Andres Gomez defeated Mansour Bahrami on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Nuveen Masters over-35 championship.

ITALIAN INDOORS: Defending champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov won a battle of serves against unseeded Czech Daniel Vacek 6-3, 3-6,6-3 Friday night to move into the semifinals of the Italian Indoors ATP Tournament in Milan, Italy.

U.S. INDOOR: Qualifier Chris Woodruff continued the best run of his professional career, upsetting fourth-seeded Marcelo Rios on Friday to reach the semifinals of the U.S. Indoor in Philadelphia.

He'll face No. 7 seed Todd Woodbridge in one semifinal and second seed Jim Courier meets No. 6 Mark Woodforde in the other.

TORRENCE REGAINS RECORD: Gwen Torrence regained the American indoor record in the women's 200-meter dash, clocking 22.70 seconds during a trial heat Friday at the USA Mobil Championships in Atlanta.

ISU TABS CROSS: Irv Cross, who had a long career in the National Football League before appearing on "The NFL Today" for 17 years on CBS, on Friday was named athletic director at Idaho State University.

Ryne Sandberg was back at second base for the Chicago Cubs, and it looked like he had never left.

"I felt very natural, very comfortable," Sandberg said.

Sandberg doubled, walked, lined out and scored twice as the Chicago Cubs beat the Seattle Mariners 12-6.
