Pres Summerhays, a longtime participant, coach and observer of athletics in Utah, died at his home April 29 at the age of 90.

Summerhays, the father of Senior PGA golfer Bruce Summerhays, excelled in several sports at Granite High and the University of Utah. He was a successful coach of high school and college sports, a golf professional and in later years delighted in the athletic accomplishments of his sons and grandchildren.A four-sport all-stater in high school, Summerhays went on to star in football for the University of Utah, where he was an honorable mention All-American.

He coached at Carbon High School for 20 years, winning state football titles in 1938 and 1951. At the University of Utah, Summerhays was the head baseball coach for 23 years, as well as the golf coach, ski coach and assistant football coach. He also helped build the course at the Carbon Country Club, where he served as the head professional.

In 1978, Summerhays was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the College Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame after compiling a 322-282 record at the U. with several league championships.

He is survived by his three sons, Bruce, Gary and Lynn, 27 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
