Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa dragged his 36-year-old daughter away from television cameras during an interview when she urged him to retire in the face of mounting political attacks.

"There are problems facing father, and I want my father to retire from politics," Kanchana Silpaarcha, a member of Parliament, said in the interview broadcast Thursday night and played again and again Friday. When she continued with "I'm also fed up with . . . ," Banharn grabbed her by the arm from behind and pulled her toward a waiting limousine.

"Better explain it in Parliament," he told her.

Banharn has been under constant attack since the 63-year-old provincial politician became prime minister in July 1995. A series of corruption scandals, a censure debate and charges of incompetence in handling the economy have plagued his administration.
