Shall we observe a moment of silence for the passing of "Lush Life?"

Nah.This piece of junk will go down in the television history books for one reason and one reason only - it was the first show canceled during the 1996-97 television season.

The fact that it held on for four weeks is remarkable. The fact that it got on the air at all is amazing.

With the unattractive pairing of Lori Petty and Karyn Parsons - combined with bad writing and no sense of taste whatsoever - somebody at Fox should have killed this turkey before it left the farm.

The American viewing public should be congratulated for rejecting "Lush Life" in such overwhelming numbers.

The only bad news is that Fox will find something else to put on in its place after the final "Lush" airing tonight.

And considering Fox's track record, that's not a particularly appetizing prospect.

- Unfortunately, Fox isn't canceling "Party Girl," only sending it on hiatus for retooling.

There's no truth to the rumor that Fox is also trying to retool the Edsel.

- Fox, which keeps telling us how committed it is to news, will not carry the first presidential debate on Sunday. Instead, the fourth network will air a baseball playoff game.

- ABC has also signed a deal with "Roseanne" co-star Laurie Metcalf. The network has given a 13-episode on-air commitment to a Metcalf sitcom to begin airing in the fall of 1997.

There's been no official announcement that this will indeed be the final season for "Rose-anne," but this is a pretty good combination. That series could not survive the loss of Metcalf, who has won three Emmys for her role as Roseanne's sister, Jackie.

- Nepotism is alive and well in Hollywood. Randy Spelling has landed a role in the upcoming NBC soap opera "Sunset Beach," which - believe it or not - is being produced by his dad, Aaron Spelling.

Randy's only other TV credits are a recurring role on "Beverly Hills, 90210" and a co-starring role on "Malibu Shores." Both of those shows - believe it or not - were also produced by his father.

Randy is, of course, the younger brother of Tori Spelling. Tori, of course, would not have a career had she not landed a role on her father's "90210."
