GRIZZLY HONORED: Utah Grizzlies goalie Wade Flaherty has been selected as the International Hockey League's Goaltender of the Week for the period of Oct. 20-26, 1997. Flaherty recorded 58 saves and gave up just one goal in leading Utah to victories over Las Vegas (7-1) and Cleveland (2-0).
The Southwest Division-leading Grizzlies (7-3-1) are in Las Vegas tonight to meet the Thunder. Ian Furness will broadcast the action on KTKK, 630 AM at 8 p.m.
Utah returns to the E Center Thursday and Saturday against Milwaukee.
Baseball
PADRES PICK STEWART: Dave Stewart has been named pitching coach of the San Diego Padres. Stewart, 40, has been special assistant to general manager Kevin Towers since Oct. 18, 1996. During the offseason, he will continue to work with the club's scouting and player development efforts in Latin America.
Stewart had a 168-129 record and a 3.95 ERA during a 15-year big-league career. He was MVP of the 1989 World Series with the Oakland A's, and also won World Series titles with Los Angeles in 1981 and Toronto in 1993. He had four straight 20-win seasons with Oakland, 1987-90, and was 8-0 in American League Championship Series play.
"I've been released, traded, I've been a 20-game winner, I've been a zero-winner," Stewart said. "When it comes to relating to players, I don't think there's much they can surprise me with.'
DODGERS LOSE OUTFIELDERS: Otis Nixon and Darren Lewis, outfielders acquired late last season by the Los Angeles Dodgers, filed for free agency Monday.
Nixon, 38, played center field for the Dodgers on a regular basis after being acquired from Toronto on Aug. 12 and hit .274 with 18 RBIs and 12 stolen bases in 42 games.
Lewis, 30, who played left field most of the time after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 27, hit .299 with 10 RBIs in 26 games for the Dodgers.

BENGALS CORNERBACK SIGNS: Cornerback Corey Sawyer agreed to a one-year extension Monday with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Sawyer, in his fourth season, would have been a free agent after the season.
The Bengals drafted Sawyer in the fourth round out of Florida State in 1994. He has started only 10 games in his career.
CHARGER CONSIDERS LAWSUIT: Chargers defensive tackle Shawn Lee is considering filing a lawsuit after he was detained by police in a case of mistaken identity.
Lee and a companion were handcuffed and questioned on Friday by three officers with a regional car theft task force, Lee's lawyer, Peter Ginsberg, said Monday. They were eventually released.

LONE AMERICAN ADVANCES: Vincent Spadea, the lone American in the field, routed Colombia's Eduardo Rincon 6-1, 6-1 on Monday to advance to the second round of the Colombian Open clay-court tournament in Bogota, Colombia.
In other first-round matches, second-seeded Julian Alonso of Spain beat Gaston Etlis of Argentina 6-3, 6-3, and Davide Sanguinetti of Italy upset fourth-seeded Galo Blanco of Spain 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2).

BARKLEY BATTLE: The bar patron who was thrown through a plate-glass window by Charles Barkley is considering a civil lawsuit against the Houston Rockets star, the man's attorney said Monday.
Jorge Lugo sustained a cut to his upper right arm after he was thrown through the window Sunday morning at a downtown bar. Lugo, 20, is being evaluated by doctors to see if he injured his head, attorney Mark NeJame said.
