The City Council has placed its stamp of approval on a lifetime golfing pass that was awarded to Mayor Lynn Pett 12 years ago for his work in developing the Murray Parkway Golf Course.
Council members voted 4-1 Tuesday night to approve a resolution ratifying the lifetime pass given to Pett by former Mayor LaRell Muir in 1985.But the council balked on approving a similar resolution for R. Preston Miller, a Murray resident who was also given a multiyear pass by Muir for donating five acres of land for the golf course project valued at $95,000.
Pett, who is stepping down next month after two terms as mayor, said Thursday he doesn't know how lack of council approval will affect Miller's pass because the time limit was not specified.
But he admits the denial was a disappointment because Miller's contribution of land was the first major step in getting the golf course project funded.
Councilman Norm Nielsen, who cast the dissenting vote, commended Pett's work as a city employee in developing the golf course but indicated he is concerned about setting this kind of precedent.
