A retired Colorado Springs homicide detective is joining the JonBenet Ramsey murder investigation, Boulder authorities said Thursday.
Andrew "Lou" Smit, 61, was hired by District Attorney Alex Hunter to serve as a liaison between the DA's office and the Boulder police, city spokesman Kelvin McNeill said at the city's weekly press briefing."He has an impeccable reputation and is highly respected," McNeill said.
In 1995, Smit was credited with playing a major role in solving the 31/2-year-old, high-profile murder of a 13-year-old El Paso County girl.
As chief investigator for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, Smit sent fingerprints from the crime scene to 92 law-enforcement agencies. That led to the arrest of Robert Browne, who is now serving a sentence of life without parole for the 1991 murder of Heather Dawn Church.
Smit will follow the JonBenet case from the police investigation to help the district attorney's office build its criminal case, McNeill said.
