Brigham Young University's Department of Theatre and Film has given a Bible-based film its best of show award in its annual "Final Cut" competition.

The winner, a 10-minute film called "Elijah and the Widow of Zaraphath," was such a success, the department opted to show the film for its convocation this past Friday."Elijah" was directed, produced and written by Alisa Anglesey.

The film won best picture, best narrative, best direction-narrative, best cinematography, best editing, best art direction, best acting and best sound design.

One film not completed in time for the Final Cut showcase, "The Fourth Witness," will premiere May 9. The film is the story of Mary Whitmer and the account of how she handled and saw the original Book of Mormon gold plates. For more information about this showing call 801-378-6645.

Other award-winners:

Best documentary/best direction (documentary): "True Fans," recently screened in Salt Lake City; it was directed by Dan Austin.

Best animation: "Hope" (Eric Sandberg).

Best experimental film & best score: "Seaside," a dance film directed and choreographed by Caroline Prohosky.

Best screenplay: "Post-Mortem," an experimental comedy produced in a joint effort of Karl Bowman, Kevin Redford, Scott Hurst and Rick Acker.

Best promotional spot: "Adventures in Rugby, Part 1," directed and edited by Spencer Filichia.

Audience choice, best picture: "Strongest of Them All," directed by Robert Jolley.

Audience choice, best narrative: "3 Extreme Guys," directed by Ian Puente and Robert Caldwell.

Runners up: "Exposure" (best direction narrative); "Esperanza" (best picture); "Your Local Fine Arts" (audience choice).
