Etta Day Ridd, 95, passed away on May 4, 1997 of natural causes. The day was Sunday, her favorite day of the week.
She was a sweet little lady who loved the Lord and her family and spent her life proving it.Born in Hunter, Utah on August 30, 1901 in a family of 11 children, she was the youngest of five who survived to adulthood. Her parents were Hunter pioneers, Elizabeth Jane Russell and Laronzo Day. Of the family, one sister, Irene Day Fuelner 99, of Hunter, survives.
She spent the first half of her life in Hunter. She married her childhood sweetheart, Heber Eugene Ridd in 1920. They were married for 66 years before he passed away at age 86 in a tragic auto/pedestrian accident in Las Vegas, Nev., in which Etta was severely injured also.
They had nine children, all born while living in Hunter. They are Donald Eugene-deceased, Leon (Lucille), Floretta Christensen (Rulon), R. Duane (Janet), Dr. Merrill K. (Joyce), all of Holladay, Utah, Dale (Marta) of Sandy, UT. LaMar D. (Gwen-deceased, presently Jeane) of Santa Clara, Ut.; Gordon L. (Susan) and LaVelle Moss (Dr. James R. Moss - deceased), both of Orem; 42 grandchildren, 106 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren survived as do four sisters-in-law, Rita E. Day, Irene H. Ridd, and Mabel Ridd Peterson, of Hunter, and Rita Ridd Player of Salem, Oregon.
Except for an LDS mission served with her husband in Hawaii, Etta spent the second half of her life as a resident of Holladay, where she delighted in genealogy and quilting lovely baby quilts for each grandchild as they started their family. Gardening, sharing the produce with others, and church activities were dear to her heart. She became an accomplished oil painter at age 70, and her children treasure many beautiful pictures.
Her family will always cherish her example of righteous living, and above all her love of the Lord. The world was truly a better place for her having been here.
