Eight of the City Council's nine members have written to the committee working on a bid to host the 2012 summer Olympics, saying "no thanks."

The letter thanked committee members for their hard work but noted that hundreds of residents had called to oppose bringing the games to Seattle."The greatest concerns that we've heard are that the Olympics will not result in significant long-term net public benefit, nor solve our enormous regional problems in transportation, the environment and housing," the letter said.

Council members also could not agree to indemnify the Olympic organization against legal liabilities, nor provide guarantees for cost overruns or losses.

Of nine cities considering bid efforts, Houston, Tampa, Cincinnati and Dallas have passed resolutions. In addition to Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Baltimore-Washington, D.C., have not.
