Rear Adm. John Ryan was chosen to become the next superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, a newspaper reported Friday.

His name was forwarded this week by Navy Secretary John Dalton to Defense Secretary William Cohen, who is expected to pass the recommendation to President Clinton, Pentagon sources told The (Baltimore) Sun.The Senate would have to confirm Ryan's promotion to the 152-year-old academy, which trains Navy and Marine officers.

Ryan, 52, would succeed Adm. Charles Larson, a four-star admiral who is leaving the academy in June. Larson has worked to toughen standards after a series of scandals involving misconduct by midshipmen.
