Friends and fellow guardsmen streamed into the Vatican's little parish church Thursday for the funeral of the young Swiss Guard who killed his commander, the commander's wife and then himself.

Despite the circumstances of Cedric Tornay's death, a guard of honor took part and guardsmen, several of them visibly moved, acted as pallbearers. The head of the Swiss Bishops' Conference, Lausanne Archbishop Amadee Grab, celebrated the Mass, and the Swiss Ambassador to the Holy See attended.

Chief among the mourners was Tornay's mother Muguette Tornay. Sitting behind her was the family of the man Tornay is said to have killed: Swiss Guard Commander Alois Estermann.

The Vatican says Tornay, in a moment of "madness," shot Estermann and Estermann's wife to death Monday night, then turned his gun on himself.
