As the hits piled up, the records collapsed Saturday when Southern California beat Arizona State 21-14 in a heavy-hitting College World Series title game.
Of the 111 tournament records listed in the NCAA's media guide for the World Series, at least 35 unofficially were broken and 17 were tied as USC won a record 12th national championship."I've never seen anything like this. I'm sure we still missed some," said Jim Wright, NCAA director of statistics.
"Hopefully, they will give us a raise for all the extra work we did during this game because of the records," he joked.
Most of the records fell in batting categories as the teams combined for 35 runs, 39 hits, 34 RBIs and 85 total bases - all records.
Even the length of the game - one minute short of four hours - and the crowd of 24,456 broke championship-game records.
USC and Arizona State each broke the title-game record for most runs by a team, formerly 13 by LSU (1997) and Oklahoma (1994).
The Trojans and Sun Devils also tied the record for most home runs in the championship game with four each. Their combined eight homers broke the old mark of seven, set in 1995 by Cal State Fullerton and USC.

Besides team feats, the Trojans set or tied individual marks.
Second baseman Wes Rachels broke the title-game record for most RBIs with seven, which also tied a CWS game record. The previous mark was five RBIs by Bill Horning of Minnesota in 1956.
Besides a record seven at-bats, Rachels joined teammate Jeremy Freitas in tying the single-game record for most hits with five, first set in 1949 by Jim Shamblin of Texas. Since then, 10 players have tied the record.
Designated hitter Jason Lane broke the record for most hits during the tournament with 15, one better than Alabama's Joe Caruso last year. Lane also tied the record for most doubles in a series with four when he hit one in the second inning.
Lane and right fielder Brad Ticehurst each had homers Saturday, tying a CWS record of four shared with four others. The most recent four-homer performances came in 1994 by Florida State's J.D. Drew and USC's Geoff Jenkins.
Trojans reliever Jack Krawcyzk got the final five outs, setting NCAA records with his 23rd save of the season and 49th of his career.
