As nighttime finally settled in over Salt Lake City on Saturday night, June 27, our city lost a landmark establishment. After 31 years, the Ristorante Della Fontana closed its doors for the last time.
Last week, when my wife and I learned of the closure, we decided to visit on Friday night, both to enjoy a wonderful dinner in that beautiful old Catholic church and to learn the reasons for these sad tidings. When we arrived, we learned that it was a retirement, of sorts, that was ultimately closing these doors. The owner, Mr. Young, had rented this handsome building for the past three decades and his landlord had just recently sold the property.
At least Mr. Young went out in style. On Friday night he was working the tables, speaking with the guests. I overheard enough of the conversations to learn that he had arranged new jobs for his employees with other businesses in the valley. He is leaving the scene sorrowful but not bitter. Now that is a class act.
Mr. Young, on behalf of Salt Lake City, I thank you for 31 years of memories. Della Fontana will be missed.
