WEST VALLEY CITY--Ernest "Ernie" Gus Paulos, 80, of West Valley City died Monday, January 18, 1999 at his residence following a long illness.

He was born February 10, 1918 in Salt Lake City, the son of Gus A. Paulos and Polexene Rudopoulos Paulos, both of Greece.Mr. Paulos was a Magna native. He was a graduate of Cyprus High School. He attended Utah State University, where he was a song leader and a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. In 1938, after the sudden death of his father, he took over the family business, Paulos Auto Company, in Magna. Two years later, in 1940, he married Katherine Joan Dizikes; they had four children and later divorced. In 1976, he and his brother, Pete, moved the Chevrolet dealership to West Valley City, where they managed the business until their retirement in 1980. He then married Pat Argentos. For 42 years, Mr. Paulos was a highly respected businessman and Chevrolet/Oldsmobile dealer. During that time he received many national awards. He served in the United States Navy and was a Thirty-second degree Mason. He was also a long-standing member of the Chamber of Commerce.

In his youth, "Ernie" was an ardent sportsman. He loved fishing and hunting with his sons, grandsons, and friends. He worked hard and played hard. He had a great zest for life and lived his life to the very fullest. He fought his hardest battle with a debilitating disease, each and every day. He will be sorely missed by a loving family, many friends, acquaintances, and his community.

Survivors include his wife, Pat Argentos Paulos, of West Valley; and his four children, one daughter, Patricia Paulos Miller (Dr. Howard Miller) of Huntsville, AL; and three sons, Mr. Gus Paulos (Barbara), Dr. Peter Paulos (Arthea), and Dr. Lonnie Paulos (Sally) all of Salt Lake City; brother, Pete G. Paulos and sister, Katy Paulos Sperso, both of Salt Lake City. Other survivors include 13 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and his extended family; a step-daughter, Mona Harris (Vaughn), six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by both parents and a sister, Helen Paulos Mantes, of Tooele.

Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. and 10-11 a.m. Friday morning at Evans and Early Funeral Home. There will be a prayer service at 11 a.m. Friday at the mortuary with Father John Kaloudis officiating. Burial will be at Mr. Olivet Cemetery. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Shriner's Hospital.
