PROVO -- Nearly $40,000 worth of art is missing from the Repartee Art Gallery after an apparent burglary the weekend of Jan. 14-16.

Police investigators say the Riverwoods gallery, 4801 N. University Ave., was apparently broken into during the nighttime hours.Provo police detective Bud Walker said the owners noticed items missing on Jan. 14, but weren't certain exactly what was taken until days later. They notified police after some of the physical evidence was cleaned away, Walker said.

Whoever took the art had to be able to carry away some heavy objects and would have needed a van or a truck to transport it, he said.

As of Thursday, police had no suspects and few leads.

"There's some beautiful pieces, and they're going to be hard to hide," Walker said.

Some of the art pieces are fairly large and recognizable. Several are sculptures by local Alpine artist Dennis Smith and local sculptor Avard Fairbanks, as well as paintings and ceramic pieces by James C. Christensen.

The public is asked to contact police if they have information about the theft or if any of the art is noticed. Call Walker at 852-7283. Photographs are on the Provo City Web page at provo.org/"www.provo.org/.
