PROVO -- BYU President Merrill J. Bateman recently announced the appointment of a new dean of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Brigham Young University.

Earl M. Woolley replaces former dean Bill R. Hays, who has returned to full-time teaching and research in the computer science department. The appointment was effective in August.In addition, Dana T. Griffin of the geology faculty has been appointed as a new associate dean in the college replacing Larry Christensen, who is also returning to the computer science faculty. Nolan Mangelson will continue as an associate dean in the college.

After receiving both B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry from BYU, Woolley completed a National Research Council of Canada post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, studying the thermodynamics of solutions and intermolecular bonding.

He joined the BYU department of chemistry in 1970, serving as chairman of that department from 1989 to 1995.

He also completed additional research at the University of Lethbridge, the Department of Energy's Bartlesville Energy Technology Center and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

He has published more than 60 papers on the topic of solution thermodynamics.

Griffin received a B.S. degree from the U.S. Naval Academy and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He has been a member of the BYU faculty since 1979.
