Temporary replacement found for judge under probe

NORTH LOGAN (AP) -- A Hyde Park justice court judge will finish the term of a North Logan judge who resigned last month amid a criminal investigation into his conduct on the bench.The North Logan City Council on Thursday appointed David Marx to serve the remainder of Louis Griffin's term, which ends in February. Marx will continue to serve as Hyde Park's judge, where he has been for three years, while North Logan searches for a new one to serve a full four-year term.

Cache County Attorney Scott Wyatt and sheriff's investigators have been investigating Griffin for months but refuse to say why.

Sheriff's Lt. Dave Bennett has only said the investigation centers on "inappropriate judicial conduct."

State honors firm for work with people who are disabled

REM Utah Inc. received the eighth annual Ila Marie Goodey Award for outstanding efforts in supporting Utah residents with disabilities as they reach personal goals.

The state Division of Services for People with Disabilities honored the firm Sept. 20. Sue Geary, division director, said there's no more important work than to give people with disabilities a choice of what they want to be in life and then help them achieve it.

REM provides specialized services for children and adults who have mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy and other challenging medical and physical conditions. The program started with three clients in Provo in 1996. It now serves 32 people statewide in group homes, day retirement services and supervised apartments. REM employs about 100 people.

The award is named for Ila Marie Goodey, a former University of Utah psychologist who was nationally recognized as a passionate advocate for people with disabilities.

Cache Valley woman dies 5 days before 105th birthday

LOGAN (AP) -- Eva Israelsen, believed to be the oldest person in Cache Valley, died Thursday, five days before her 105th birthday.

Mrs. Israelsen appeared on the pages of Life magazine in October 1993 in an article noting the birth of her 200th and 201st great-grandchildren. Since then, her progeny has grown to 271 great-grandchildren and 40 great-great-grandchildren, to go along with her 11 children and their 67 offspring.

Born Eva May Butler on Oct. 5, 1894, at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon in Salt Lake County, the longtime dairy farm wife remained active, walking at least a mile a day well past her 100th birthday.

She met Victor E. Israelsen while attending Utah Agricultural College, now Utah State University, in the 1920s and later married him.

With the construction of Hyrum Dam in 1936, the couple moved to North Logan, where they spent the rest of their lives.

Silver Beaver nominations must be submitted by Nov. 2

Nominations will be accepted through Tuesday, Nov. 2, for Silver Beaver awards in the Great Salt Lake Council, Boy Scouts of America. No nominations will be accepted after that date.

Nominees must be currently registered as adult Scouters in the council to receive an award, the highest recognition given by a council. Group seeks winter clothes for women and children

Horizons 66, a nonprofit community service organization, is gathering winter clothing for battered and homeless women and children through Wednesday.

Amateur photographers urged to enter contest

Amateur photographers, particularly beginners, are invited to participate in the International Open Amateur Photography Contest.

Dec. 15 is the deadline for entries. Anyone may enter. There is no entry fee.

More than $60,000 in prizes will be awarded this year in the contest, officials say.

"Everyone has at least one memorable photo that captures a special moment in time. When people learn about our free photography contest, they suddenly realize that their own favorite photos can win cash prizes, as well as gain national exposure," said Jeffrey Bryan, contest director.

Those interested should send one photograph in only one of the following categories: people, travel, pets, children, sports, nature, action, humor, portraiture or other.

The photo must be a color or black-and-white print (unmounted), 8 by 10 inches or smaller. All entries must include the photographer's name and address on the back, as well as the category and the title of the photo.

Photographs should be sent to The International Library of Photography, Suite 101-9006, 3600 Crondall Lane, Owings Mills, MD 21117. Entries must be postmarked by Dec. 15.

Service may have been rendered during World War II or the Korean or Vietnam War eras.
