Are you a big Ricky Martin fan? And you haven't got tickets to the big concert at the Delta Center on Saturday night?
No problem. Well, less of a problem than it might otherwise be, given that CBS is presenting Ricky in concert tonight."Ricky Martin: One Night Only" (7 p.m., Ch. 2) is an energetic hour that focuses mostly on the Puerto Rican heartthrob performing before a crowd of adoring fans at Liberty State Park in New Jersey -- a rather spectacular setting, with the New York skyline serving as a backdrop. And he's got that crowd in the palm of his hand, as he sings and dances in the style that made him a star.
While CBS, with its largely older audience, might not seem like the most logical place for a Ricky Martin concert, it's actually a homecoming of sorts for the star. It was his show-stopping rendition of "The Cup of Life" at last February's Grammy-cast on the network that catapulted him to superstardom in America.
Martin reprises that song, along with his biggest hits -- including "Livin' La Vida Loca," "She's All I Ever Had," "Maria," "Spanish Eyes" and "Shake Your Bon-Bon." The music is great, and Martin's hip-swiveling leaves his fans swooning.
The hour also includes a nice bit with fellow Latinos Jose Feliciano and Carlos Santana -- two performers a lot of Martin's fans probably never even heard of. They chat a bit before the three launch into "Light My Fire."
The hour is also broken up with some brief clips of Martin through the years, back to his Menudo days. And there's a filmed sequence of Martin visiting Puerto Rico and interacting with the people there. There are some particularly nice moments with the singer and a group of kids.
But it's the concert back in New Jersey that's the focus of the hour. It's certainly not the same thing as actually being at one of Martin's performances, but it's a good second-best.
And if "One Night Only" isn't enough, Martin will be back on CBS on Monday, Dec. 6, at 9 p.m. in "And So This Is Christmas." He performs the original song, "Ay Ay Ay It's Christmas" and reminisces about his favorite holiday memories in an hour that also features Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, Harry Connick Jr., Babyface and Charlotte Church.
