ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) -- A plane carrying mail to an Alaska village crashed into the Yukon River, killing the pilot, the state troopers said Saturday.

They idenified the pilot as Richard Fey, the sole occupant of the Navajo aircraft being used to ferry 1,300 pounds of mail to Galena. The crash occurred Friday morning after Fey issued an emergency radio message that his plane was going down.

The Alaska Army and Air National Guard later found the plane in 15 to 20 feet of water in the Yukon River, the troopers said.

Divers were unable to search the area Friday because of a strong river current and very silty water, but dive teams recovered the pilot's body on Saturday, said spokesman Tim Despain.
