LaVon Petersen Smith, age 88, passed away peacefully at her home in Holladay, June 6, 1999.
She was born September 8, 1910 in Holladay, and lived there her entire life. She graduated from Granite High School and the University of Utah. She married G. Carlos Smith Jr., in the Salt Lake Temple, March 16, 1933. They are the parents of five children.As a young woman, she taught school in Salt Lake City. She along with her husband founded a family business in Holladay. She led a life of service in her community including involvement in the American Cancer Society and the Holladay Library.
LaVon was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served with her husband, presiding over the missionary work in the Central States and Southeast Asia Missions. She served in various church capacities as a member of the Relief Society General Board, stake and ward Relief Society presidencies, ward Young Women president, as well as Primary, Relief Society, Sunday School teacher and visiting teacher.
She loved people, especially youth and children. She was known lovingly throughout the world as "Grandma Smith".
She was preceded in death by her husband, G. Carlos Smith, Jr., a daughter, Susan Smith Miller and a great-granddaughter, Marie Elizabeth Smith.
She is survived by her children, Carlos "Bud" (Annette), Jerry (Karen), Stephen (Sue), Nanette (Bruce), 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 9, 1999 at 12 noon at the Holladay Stake Center, 4568 South Holladay Blvd. A viewing will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Holladay-Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 S. Highland Drive. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral service from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, Holladay Memorial Cemetery.
