Dr. Paul Richard Cazier, 35, died Jan. 1, 2000 from complications related to a brain tumor.

He was born in Salt Lake City on April 20, 1964, the son of Stanford and Shirley Cazier. After living seven years in Logan, Paul's father became the President of California State University at Chico. The family returned to Logan in 1979 when Stanford assumed the presidency of Utah State University. Paul's life was greatly enriched by growing up on these two campuses.Paul was a graduate of Logan High School where his many activities included football and track. He played the saxophone in high school and college jazz bands, and developed a love of jazz music which he enjoyed to his final day.

Paul attended Utah State University where he double-majored in Biology and Liberal Arts and minored in Chemistry, Philosophy, and Japanese. He served an LDS mission to Tokyo, Japan. He married his soul mate Lisa Steed on March 18, 1987 in the Logan LDS Temple, and the two of them graduated magna cum laude in June of that year.

Paul attained his M.D. from the University of Chicago, where he attended on a military scholarship. He completed a one year transitional internship and a four year residency in radiology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. During his final year there, he served as a chief resident. He spent two more years specializing in neuroradiology at the University of California San Francisco. Having achieved the rank of Major, the Army then assigned him as the MRI chief for the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, TX. He had just passed his final medical board exam when he diagnosed his own brain tumor in November 1998. He and his family then moved back to his father's home in Logan to be near family.

As much as he loved his brief medical career, he always considered his greatest accomplishment to be his children: Katie (9), Andrew (6), and Miranda (4). He was a gentle, wonderful father, always finding time to teach and play with his kids. He was fond of parks, museums, movies, trips to the mountains or the beach, or anywhere he could share with his wife and family.

He was an excellent doctor, a pleasant coworker, and a willing teacher, always ready to help where he was needed in both is professional and church work. A gifted writer, he left his family the legacy of a 1200 page journal. He had much to offer and many things he still wanted to do, and he will be greatly missed. He faced his final year with courage and humor, and was very grateful to all the people who helped him along the way.
