Trail Mountain Mine will be closed in the fall of 2001 after coal reserves are mined out, which will result in the layoffs of about 200 employees of Energy West Mining Co., the mine operating company.

The closure was announced Wednesday by Interwest Mining Co., a subsidiary of PacifiCorp. Coal supplies for PacifiCorp's three electric generating plants in the area will come form its Deer Creek Mine, with other coal purchased from other Utah mines."This was a difficult decision to make -- a step we do not take lightly," said Dee Jense, president of Interwest Mining Co. "However, the fact that Trail Mountain will be mined out in 2001 -- and we do not control adjacent coal reserves -- will require closure of the mine."
