KRCL (FM-90.9) has purchased a new home at 1973 W. North Temple and hopes to have the building remodeled and ready for use by August. The station is currently using cramped quarters in a suite at 230 S. 500 West.
Since the year 2000 marks the 20th anniversary for the station, being able to purchase its own building is another milestone for the community radio station with a format more diverse than any other in Utah.Besides more space, the new facility will also feature new broadcast equipment to replace the outdated equipment KRCL is now using.
KRCL has been conducting an extensive campaign since 1996 to raise money for the new facility and equipment. It now has pledges for more than $1 million, just $100,000 short of its overall goal.
"The success of KRCL's capital campaign can be credited to KRCL's dedicated staff, volunteers and contributing members for providing an invaluable asset to the community," said Sandi Terry, KRCL capital campaign director.
Terry praised the leadership of Alonzo Watson, director for the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, "who was instrumental in finding funding to ensure KRCL could purchase their own home to provide a broadcast forum for a diversity of music and information."
KRCL was also able recently to raise $160,000 from listeners in its semiannual fund drive for operational expenses.
The station is a cultural-center radio station, providing such diverse programming as bluegrass, reggae, rock, Indian, Jazz, soul, Latin, New Age, folk and a variety of public-affairs programming.
KFVR (FM-107.9) is bringing Dave Candland back to the radio starting May 1.
He'll do a morning show on "The Fever" from 6-10 a.m. weekdays. Candland most recently did traffic reporting for Fox 13 and Metro Traffic prior to that.
KBYU SERIES -- Alzheimer's is a disease that is predicted to increasingly affect America as baby boomers age. There are more than 4 million Americans who now suffer from the disease, and that figure could rise to 14 million in the next few decades.
KBYU (FM-89.1) will broadcast "The Zen of Alzheimer's," a lecture by Louise Plummer, a Brigham Young University English professor, on Thursday, April 27, 9 p.m.
She will talk about Alzheimer's and related experiences -- both humorous and sad -- while caring for her mother, who has the disease.
Alzheimer's is a brain disorder that gradually destroys the ability to reason, remember, imagine and learn. It is estimated that more than 10 percent of persons age 65 and over suffer from it, and nearly half of the population age 85 and older. There is no known cure for the disease, but there are treatments,
Plummer's lecture was originally given March 16 at part of a BYU lecture series in the Museum of Fine Arts auditorium.
KBYU can be heard in southern Utah on FM-89.5.
"The Evacuation of LDS Missionaries From Europe at the Onset of WWII" will be the title of next month's lecture in this series, by David F. Boone, assistant professor of church history and doctrine at BYU. That lecture will air on KBYU on May 25 at 9 p.m.
KBYU is also making available cassettes and CDs of the lecture broadcasts. Call 1-800-298-5298 for more information.
