SoccerFREEZZ EXPAND ROSTER: The Utah Freezz selected former Portland Python star Rob Baarts in the 2000 World Indoor Soccer League draft Wednesday. Utah acquired the pick from the expansion St. Louis Steamers in exchange for future considerations.

Baarts played with new Freezz player-coach Jeff Betts in Portland last year. He was the Pythons' third-leading scorer.

The Freezz also made five other selections in the five-round draft: Matt Hein, Brian Cushing, Nicolai Gurov, Mark Chaney and Matthew Blazek.

Wrestling

LAMANO WINS NATIONAL TITLE: Layton High junior Josh Lamano won the Under-20, 63 kilogram division at the Fila Junior World Team Trials in Lincoln, Neb., this week. The victory advanced him to the world competition in Nantes, France, on July 3-6.

Lamano defeated Kelly Madden 12-0 for the championship in the Greco Roman competition.

Lamano will train at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado in June in preparation for the world competition.

Baseball

M'S SIGN HENDERSON: Rickey Henderson, released by the New York Mets over the weekend, reached an agreement to play for the Seattle Mariners.

The deal includes a team option for a 2001 contract at $3 million with a $250,000 buyout. He is making $1.9 million this season. Henderson, a 10-time All-Star and the 1990 AL MVP, is baseball's career stolen base leader.

Hockey

BOURQUE WILL PLAY: Colorado defenseman Ray Bourque, who has missed the last four playoff games because of a strained left knee, practiced and pronounced himself ready to play in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals against Dallas on Friday night.

Tennis

GERMAN OPEN: Pete Sampras lost 6-4, 6-4 to Arnaud Di Pasquale in the second round of the $2.95 million German Open.
