Last year: Payne Stewart won his second U.S. Open title by one stroke over Phil Mickelson at Pinehurst, N.C.

Last week: Dennis Paulson beat David Duval on the fourth hole of a playoff to win the Buick Classic in Harrison, N.Y.

On the tour: Stewart was killed in a plane crash last year. . . . Only five players have won the Open more then twice (Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Hale Irwin). Two are playing in this year's tournament: Nicklaus and Irwin. . . . Six players have won back-to-back Open titles. . . . David Duval (four wins) and Tiger Woods (two wins), the world's No. 1- and No. 2-ranked players, are the only golfers to win more then one event this season. . . . Nicklaus, 60, a four-time winner, is making his 44th straight U.S. Open appearance.

Purse: $1.8 million (Winner: $270,000).

TV: The Golf Channel (Friday-Saturday, 9-11 a.m.)

Last year: Catrin Nilsmark beat Laura Davies by two strokes. The event was only an official stop for the European Ladies Tour.

Last week: Meg Mallon beat Wendy Doolan by two shots to win the Rochester International in Pittsford, N.Y.

On the Tour: This is the first time the LPGA has played an official event in France in 10 years. . . . Last week, Karrie Webb, who has 10 victories in 17 months, finished tied for 13th. It was her only time outside the top six this year.

SBC Championship

Site: San Antonio.

Schedule: Friday-Sunday.

Course: The Dominion Country Club (6,835 yards, par 72).

Purse: $1.1 million (Winner: $165,000).

TV: None.

Last year: John Mahaffey made a 30-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to beat Jose Maria Canizares.

Last week: Tom Kite won the SBC Senior Open in Long Grove, Ill., by two strokes over Bruce Fleisher.

On the Tour: This is the 15th year the event is being held at Dominion. Only the Fleet Boston Classic has been at its current site longer. . . . Miller Barber is the only player to compete in all 15 events.

Greater Cleveland Open

Site: Concord, Ohio.

Schedule: Thursday-Sunday.

Course: Quail Hollow Country Club (6,752 yards, par 72).

Last year: Matt Gogel beat Casey Martin in a two-hole playoff for the victory.

Last event: Ian Leggatt earned his first tour victory, the Dayton Open in Centerville, Ohio. Leggatt beat Chris Smith on the first hole of a playoff.
