PHOENIX — Gannett Co. made its second major newspaper purchase in a month, agreeing to acquire Central Newspapers Inc., owner of The Arizona Republic and The Indianapolis Star, for $2.6 billion. For Central, built by journalism legend Eugene C. Pulliam and still controlled by his heirs, it simply was time to sell.
