Harlan Young Hammond, 74, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away Oct. 16, 2001.
Born August 5, 1927 to Hortense Claire Young and James Thaddeus Hammond, Jr. Married his sweetheart, Janet VanCott Young on Dec. 22, 1952 in the Salt Lake Temple.
He is survived by his wife; four children: Karen H. Nelson (Richard R.), Harlan Y. Hammond, Jr. (Julia), Peter Y. Hammond and Lark H. Morton (Michael W.); nine wonderful grandchildren: Heather, Ben, Matt and Aaron Hammond, and Cameron, Jamen, Graden, Elizabeth and Ethan Nelson; two brothers, Seymour B. (Tim) and Lorrie Hammond, Brewster, MA, and Paul Y. and Merylyn Hammond, Pittsburgh, PA.
He served in many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including four missions - one with his beloved wife. He was an avid scriptorian and loved to study and teach the gospel and for many years served as a gospel doctrine teacher.
He loved his country and served in the Navy as Seaman first class during World War II and as an LDS army chaplain during the Korean War. He received a commendation ribbon for his work in Korea.
A graduate of the University of Utah and George Washington Law School in Wash, D.C., he practiced law in Salt Lake City for 40 years.
He served as Chairman of the Utah Heart Association and as Chairman of the Diabetes Association.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Murray 23rd Ward 755 E. Three Fountains Dr. (4960 S 900 E). Family and friends may call Friday evening 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary (260 E. South Temple) and from 10-10:45 Sat. morning at the church prior to the services. Contributions are encouraged to the American Diabetes Association in Harlan's memory.
