SACRAMENTO — The Utah Freezz continued their improbable run toward the WISL playoffs with a 6-4 win at Arco Arena on Thursday.
The win, coupled with St. Louis' 7-6 loss at San Diego, means that Utah is one win away from qualifying for the playoffs. However, it won't be easy.
Utah travels to St. Louis on Sunday for both teams' regular season finale, with the winner advancing to the playoffs and the loser going home.
It's a position Freezz coach Jeff Betts feels very fortunate to be in.
Just two weeks ago, Utah's playoff aspirations seemed impossible. Not only would the Freezz have to win their final three games in addition to St. Louis stumbling, but they'd have to win them on the road where they'd succeeded just once all year.
After winning at San Diego earlier in the week, Jake Atkin and Craig Rhodis helped Utah make it two straight as they each scored a pair in beating Sacramento.
"All year we've been behind the 8-ball, but we've been battling all year," said Betts. "The great thing is the whole team has just come together. I think we're playing the best we've been playing all year right now. Our goal was to make the playoffs and win the championship, and we're one game away from taking that first step."
