Intermountain Health Care said Monday it has selected Salt Lake-based Okland Construction Co. as the general contractor to build its new $350 million Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.

"We are very pleased with this choice and have great confidence in the Okland team," said H. Gary Pehrson, chief executive officer of IHC's Urban Central Region.

He said Okland has a long history of construction in the health care field and is known for its "commitment to quality and attention to detail and efficiency."

Construction isn't scheduled to begin for a year, but Pehrson said Okland will immediately begin working with IHC's planning and design teams on preliminary work prior to ground being broken on a 100-acre parcel of land near 5300 S. State, the site of the Murray Smelter, which was shut down in 1949 but whose century-old smokestacks were demolished in August of last year.

The new facility, which is scheduled to open in late 2005, will have more than 1 million square feet of space and will replace LDS Hospital as IHC's "flagship" medical center. LDS will become a community hospital while Cottonwood Hospital will be used primarily for outpatient care.
