SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Legislature has approved an overhaul of the state's congressional boundaries that would eliminate one seat and help Republicans win a majority of the others.

The map of new congressional districts was approved 89-27 Wednesday. It now goes to Gov. George Ryan, who says he will sign it.

Illinois is losing one of its 20 seats in Congress because the state's population has grown slowly. The new map would create nine apparently safe districts for Republican incumbents and nine for Democratic incumbents.

The remaining district would include two incumbents: Democrat David Phelps of Eldorado and Republican Tim Johnson of Sidney. But Johnson would have the edge because the district leans Republican.
