HALL OF FAME: At Newport, R.I., Neville Godwin of South Africa won his first ATP title Sunday, defeating Martin Lee of Britain 6-1, 6-4 in the final of the $400,000 Hall of Fame Championships.

Godwin's only other final appearance was a loss to India's Leander Paes in 1998 at Newport, the only ATP grass-court tournament in the United States.

"In the first set I thought Martin might be a little nervous coming out because he was in his first final," Godwin said. "Luckily, I was in one before."

Godwin had been one point from elimination in the semifinals of a tournament highlighted by Hall of Fame inductions. Ivan Lendl and Mervyn Rose were honored Saturday.

Godwin, relying on a consistent serve and steady volley play, held serve until the eighth game of the second set.

"I felt like it was a good matchup for me," he said. "I looked at the draw to see who Martin had played before, and no one really played like me."

Lee rallied briefly in the second set, drawing to 5-4 after falling behind 5-2. Godwin then closed it out on serve, winning the title when Lee netted a backhand on double match point.

Lee acknowledged he was nervous playing in his first final.

"He didn't really give me a chance," he said. "I started slowly and it didn't help that he started well."

Godwin earned $54,000 and Lee won $31,500.
