Our dad, "R.C." passed away July 16. 2001 in Salt Lake City. He was the youngest of 10 children born to James McComb and Cicely Fudge, on August 31, 1927. He was born on Bede Street, Tyne Dock, South Shields, Durham, England, where he spent his childhood. During World War II, he and his brother, Joe, were evac-uated to the Greenfield Farm near Carlisle. After the war the family reunited in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. Dad served two years in the British Army.
On January 13, 1951, he married Joan Winifred Emmins in the Bradford LDS Chapel. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. His beloved wife preceded him in death in 1988. In 1957 he boarded an ocean liner and brought his wife and four eldest children to America where he settled in Salt Lake City. Dad was proud to become a U.S. Citizen, but instilled in each of us a love and respect of our British Heritage.
Dad was an employee of the Genealogical Society and a faithful member of the LDS Church. He served in many leadership positions. He traveled throughout the Western States to set up branch libraries. We grew up believing that his numerous part time jobs guarding the Walker Bank Building and performing janitorial services were great adventures to be shared with him. We are six grateful "Cheeky Monkees" who lived at the "Porker's Starlite Mint Chalet", where we heard tales of the Tyne Dock Scrappers, childhood adventures at the farm and hundreds of Christmas Stories from a two year stint in the British Army "WAIT FOR IT!"
After a long day at work he loaded us and our friends and headed for the Fairmont Pool, so Mom could have a break. Dad made every day an adventure. We spent summers at Camp 60 and winters sleighing in Sugar House Park. We slept out under the stars! Our dad taught us to love Sherlock Holmes, bagpipe music, "Albert and The Lion" and Licorice Allsorts.
Survived by his children, Paul (Carolyn) Cunningham, Ruth (Leroy) Allen, Mark Cunningham, Ann Cunningham, Miriam (Kathy) Cunningham, Beth (Daniel) Davis; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother survive and live in England.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 21, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4th Ave. and "N" Street.
"Red sails in the sunset, way over the sea, our dad is a "Porker" and so are we!
