PROVO — G. Eugene England, 68, a former English professor at Brigham Young University and a Mormon writer and poet, died Friday at his home in Provo after a six-month battle with brain cancer.
He had taught 22 years at BYU until his retirement in 1998 and more recently had also been a writer-in-residence at Utah Valley State College and director of the study abroad program there.
As the founding editor of Dialogue, an independent journal of Mormon writings, he also contributed to Sunstone magazine. He authored several books of personal essays.
Dr. England had been a captain in the U.S. Air Force and received a doctorate in English literature from Stanford University. He had been a teacher, as well as the dean of academic affairs at St. Olaf's College in Minnesota. He had also taught at LDS Institutes of Religion at both Stanford and the University of Utah.
He and his wife, Charlotte, served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Samoa. He had also been a branch president and bishop in the LDS Church.
Dr. England was buried Saturday, Aug. 18, in private graveside services at Wasatch Lawn in Salt Lake City, but a memorial service to honor him will be held on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 1 p.m. at the Provo Tabernacle, 100 S. University Ave.
