Several people arrested Wednesday in connection with a major cocaine ring that centered around a restaurant appeared in court this morning.

The main focus of the investigation is the owner of Coachman's Dinner and Pancake House, Michael John Nikols.

Nikols, 37, appeared before 3rd District Judge Dennis Fuchs from the Salt Lake County Jail via television. He wore an orange jumpsuit and was handed a copy of the charges against him as Fuchs read them out loud.

Nikols is accused of being the leader of a drug distribution and money-laundering enterprise.

His father, John Nikols, sat in the front row of the courtroom, watching intently as his son and others arrested in the case, a couple of whom were employees, were brought to the stand to hear the charges against them.

A total of 52 felonies were charged against 19 people Wednesday. Fifteen of those people were arrested Wednesday morning. Investigators are looking for the others and believe at least one has fled the country.

Michael Nikols is charged with 11 of the 52 counts. His charges include engaging in a criminal enterprise, money laundering and distributing a controlled substance.

Outside the courtroom, John Nikols told reporters that he knew nothing of the drug ring and his only concern was his son.

"I'll do anything in my power to help my son," he said. "I'll try to get to the bottom of this. I support him because I love him."

Prosecutors do not believe John Nikols was involved in the drug and have allowed him to keep his restaurant open. Nikols said he has received a lot of support from customers since the arrests.

Michael Nikols' next scheduled court appearance is Dec. 24.
