DALLAS (AP) — A 9-year-old girl who was rescued from a closet where she had been starved and confined for months has been adopted by the couple who sought custody at birth.
The adoption by Bill and Sabrina Kavanaugh was finalized Tuesday.
"This was the most important day," Sabrina Kavanaugh said Tuesday evening from the couple's home. "It was indescribable actually. She was hyper and happy and jumping around. She was ready for it and we were ready for it."

Barbara Atkinson, the girl's mother, was sentenced to life in prison in January for forcing the girl to live in a lice-infested closet lined with waste.
