1907 ~ 2003

Ila Nielson Sundwall passed away peacefully in her home on May 26, 2003. She enjoyed a long and fulfilling life, taking great joy from her family and always appreciating beauty in her surroundings.

Ila was born Jan 5, 1907 in Bluff, UT to Francis Nielson and Leona Jane Walton Nielson. Her family had moved to nearby Blanding when Ila left her home at the tender age of 15 to study at the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City. In 1928 she was called to serve in the Eastern States Mission and successfully completed various assignments in New York State.

She married Peter Val Sundwall on Dec 7, 1933. Their union was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Val practiced medicine in Murray for more than 50 years. Ila was a devoted mother to their three children and managed a home of beauty and order. Her heart, home and extraordinary culinary skills always provided gracious hospitality - serving for many years as a gathering place for her growing extended family.

Ila is survived by her three children, Peter V. Sundwall, M.D. (Connie Jean) Murray, UT, Katherine Carpenter (Craig) Murray, UT, David N. Sundwall, M.D. (Catherine) Silver Springs, MD; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Val, pre-ceded her in death on Feb 24, 1984; and grandson, Steven G. Sundwall, passed away on April 21, 1997.

The family would like to recognize and extend sincere gratitude to caregivers from Community Nursing Services, who gave exceptional loving care during Ila's last months. Ila was irreplaceable and will be remembered with great love.

Private family services were held Fri. May 30, 2003, prior to burial at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
