Designer Lloyd Klein was seriously injured in a car accident, forcing the cancellation of his show Monday night at New York's Fashion Week.

Klein, who turns 35 this week, came out of a coma Monday afternoon, two days after the crash in France in which three of his staff members and his mother also were injured, said John Arguelles, president of Groupe Klein Vendome.

He "was in a very critical condition. He has come out of his coma today, which we are so thrilled to know," Arguelles said in a telephone interview. "He showed signs of recovery ... and opened his eyes."

The crash occurred in apparently foggy conditions as Klein and his group were traveling in three cars to a Paris airport to catch a flight to New York early Saturday morning.

Klein's mother broke a shoulder but has been discharged from hospital. The three injured employees were to be discharged Monday or Tuesday, Arguelles said.

Klein himself remained in critical condition in intensive care in a Paris hospital, he said, adding that "he looks like he is going to recover."

Monday's show would have been Klein's seventh at Fashion Week.

The Paris-based designer also was to have celebrated his 35th birthday, which falls on Sunday, with a party on Friday, he said.
