BOUNTIFUL — Viewmont High School's choral students, with six choirs participating, will perform John Rutter's "Requiem" at an Abravanel Hall concert Tuesday, Feb. 22.
Soprano soloists Jennifer Smith (third movement, "Pie Jesu") and Meagan Olson (seventh movement, "Lux aeterna") will be featured in the 30-minute work by the renowned English composer. "Requiem" is a well-known, seven-movement composition that uses traditional Latin texts as well as some contemporary sacred choral text.
The choirs will be accompanied by an orchestra of musicians from the instrumental music department of Viewmont High and some community players. Jeanne McGuire is Viewmont's choir director.
The concert is free to the public, and tickets are not necessary. The choral department had a fund-raiser last fall to raise money to rent Abravanel Hall. There will be 400 singers involved.
The first half of the concert will be selected choral works by the advanced choirs from the choral department and also a selection from the musical "Beauty and the Beast," which is in rehearsal at Viewmont and will run March 3-12.
McGuire has taught at Viewmont for 28 years and has received the Utah PTA/KUED Golden Apple Outstanding Educator Award and the Davis County Foundation Outstanding Teacher Award. She also directs and choreographs the school musical and has a class total of 500 to 600 students each year.
