ATHLETIC CAREER AT BYU: Arrived in 1978 on a football scholarship . . . a sophomore starter in 1980, he led the Western Athletic Conference with seven interceptions . . . earned first-team all-WAC recognition as a senior in 1982 . . . the Cougars won five straight WAC championships during his five years at BYU.

ATHLETIC CAREER IN THE NFL: Picked in the fourth round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers . . . played on three Super Bowl teams with the 49ers — in 1984, 1988 and 1989 . . . retired after a seven-year NFL career.

COACHING CAREER - COLLEGE: Served as graduate assistant coach at BYU in 1990 and 1991 under LaVell Edwards . . . spent two seaons (1992-1993) as Stanford's secondary coach under head coach Bill Walsh, a former 49ers head coach . . . after coaching in the NFL for two years, joined the University of California as defensive coordinator under head coach Steve Mariucci . . . When Mariucci left for the NFL, was named head coach of the Golden Bears in 1997 . . . retired after the 2001 season.

COACHING CAREER — NFL: Returned to the 49ers in 1994 as defensive backfield coach for head coach George Seifert . . . Helped San Francisco to a Super Bowl title in 1994 . . . Coached two years — 1994 and 1995.

ADMINISTRATIVE CAREER - BYU: Returned to his alma mater in July 2001 as associate athletic director of development . . . duties included supervising the Cougar Club and leading the fund-raising campaign for new athletic facilities . . . In September 2004, was named as co-chair of the university's Leadership Transition Team as the university released former athletics directors Val Hale and Elaine Michaelis and merged the men's and women's departments together . . . March 1, 2005, named the 12th athletics director in BYU history and the first to oversee both the men's and women's sports programs.
