I've been hearing from people 40 and over who want to know what they can do to ensure proper health in the future.

Most want to know that one juicy fitness tip that will lead to their success. But fitness success can come in as many different forms as the people who seek it.

I often start by asking my clients about their jobs to see if there is genuine passion for their work. I also ask about what hobbies or activities that they enjoy. I then ask them to tell me how they got started and how others could become successful. They easily lay out a well-articulated framework. I use their format for success in other areas of their lives to lay out their format for fitness success.

Think of all the things at which you succeed, and then apply some of those same habits to your fitness endeavors. Although the types of paths to success are endless, they all share two things: a foundation and consistency.

Start by learning the fundamentals, then add your personal work ethic and style. This translates into consistency.

Most people attempt to go from years on the couch to first place on the fitness podium in six weeks. It just doesn't happen that way. Assess your situation, then look for ways to maintain good habits, lose bad ones and improve motivation. If you already exercise yet are bored, explore new activities and vary your routine.

A 58-year-old bodybuilder recently told me the key to his success was making sure that he always had a solid core of various exercise habits in place year after year. He makes adjustments as necessary.

You are no different. Build your own foundation by learning the basics of exercise and nutrition.
