Ever miss your favorite DJ in the morning because of sickness, school, work, vacations, etc.? Now KENZ ("The End," FM-107.5) is making it easy to catch up on the doings of its morning DJs.
Sure there are some Web site logs that tell in brief what DJs did in the morning. "The Z-Morning Zoo" on KZHT, "Radio From Hell Show" on KXRK and even "Chunga and Mister" on KENZ have all excelled at putting some of their show happenings on the Web.
However, now we have "Chunga & Mister On Demand." This feature allows you to actually listen to the highlights of Chunga & Mister anytime you'd like to — on a computer, a CD or on an MP3 player.
Chunga has been on the air since 1996 and he and Mister created a new morning team in 1999; these DJs likely have lots of loyal fans out there.
Go to the KENZ Web site at www.1075.com/ondemand.php Download the segments you like and make radio fit your schedule.
Some of the segments "Chunga and Mister" have available are: "Guitar Comics," "Kevin Federline Interview Parts 1 and 2," "Michael Jackson Parts 1 and 2," "Mister's Prom Date," "TRL Meets Star Wars," "Darth Vader Gets a Ticket" and "Casey's Unbridled Laziness."
Will this kind of "radio on demand" be a trend? Time will tell.
KCPW (FM-88.3/105.3 and AM-1010) is dropping "Fresh Air" beginning May 31. Replacing that program will be "Open Source."
Billed as the first show of its kind, it will try to capture the way people talk to each other on the Internet. While other media focus on the technology only, this show — hosted by Christopher Lydon — will talk to the people behind the technology.
The new show will air 7-8 p.m. weekdays starting Tuesday and is being tested first on KCPW and some other stations. The program will launch nationally in July.
RADIO HAPPENINGS — American Country Music Award-winner and presenter Joe Nichols, was on the "Johnson and Johnson" show on KUBL last week. Nichols will also guest host the KUBL morning show on Aug. 17, when he appears in Salt Lake City. KUBL has also been conducting a "Teddy Bear Patrol" campaign to receive stuffed animals from the public that can be donated to emergency caregivers.
— Radio Disney, on AM-910 locally, and Disneyland donated $5,000, plus some merchandise, to the Christmas Box House last week. The donation will help create a Disney-themed playroom and library in the facility.
— Those "Ugly kids" billboards did turn out to be the "Z-Morning Zoo" morning show (Frankie, Dangerboy and Holly) on KZHT. It was a way to hype the DJs and call attention to a fund-raiser they are involved in. "Ugly kids become morning DJs" is the follow-up billboard, with adult photos of the DJs.
— Erica Hansen of "Scott and Erica," mornings on KENZ, will be hosting a bus trip to Denver to see a production of "Wicked" on Friday, Sept. 30. Since the musical will not reach Salt Lake City this year, going to Denver offers a sneak preview of the show. Go to the station's Web site at www.kosy.com for more details.
