PROVO — BYU's Brady Marshall scored a goal in stoppage time at the end of regulation to even the score at 1-1 against Colorado Springs. Despite multiple opportunities in overtime, the Cougars and Blizzard finished in a tie at South Stadium shortly before the fireworks at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday night.
The game was only an exhibition for the Cougars but counted on the Blizzard's record. The tie drops the Blizzard to 3-7-1 on the season.
Because it was an exhibition for the Cougars, Coach Chris Watkins started reserves exclusively. Cameron Lamb and Marshall graduated from high school just last month and played significant minutes in the second half. Watkins did insert Gilbert Gaernter, B.J. Pugmire and Aaron Gabbart, three of his best players, at the 74-minute mark for the stretch run.
The first half ended in a scoreless tie. In the 67th minute the Blizzard's Ryan Regrutto took the rebound off a corner kick and hammered it past BYU keeper Benjamin Walunas for the 1-0 lead.
BYU dominated the shots on goal 12-5 during regulation, but it wasn't until the extra minutes when reserve Mason McMullin dribbled the ball through the Blizzard defenders and passed to Marshall, who kicked it into the back of the net.
The Cougars had chances during the two 10-minute overtime periods but couldn't push it through.
BYU, 5-7-1, continues its string of six straight home games to conclude the season, Thursday against the Boulder Rapids Reserve at 7:30 p.m.
