OREM — The Lone Peak girls soccer team doesn't look like a squad that only won five games last season. With a 6-1 win at Orem on Tuesday, the Knights have started off the year with four consecutive wins — and none of them have even been close.

With a win over Brighton on Thursday, Lone Peak will already have equaled their total number of wins from last season and the team is already being looked at as a serious contender.

New head coach Mike Lahargoue arrived on the scene after coaching several years at Mountain View and has quickly infused a new attitude into the program. Lahargoue says his team is just enjoying the game and showing an unexpected level of talent.

"I just think they're having fun," said Lahargoue. "They've really adapted to my system and my style really quickly. I demand a lot out of them and we run quite a bit. They're playing the way that I want."

Because of confusion over the game's starting time, the Lone Peak team bus didn't arrive until fifteen minutes before the scheduled kickoff and Lahargoue's team barely had time to warm up before the match, but it made no difference as the Knights quickly built a 5-0 halftime lead.

In the 19th minute, Laura Goodrich sent a corner kick into the area and Orem"s goalkeeper inadvertently knocked the ball into her own net trying to make an off-balance clearance.

The Tigers dodged a bullet in the 23rd minute when Lauren Hair missed a wide open shot on a breakaway, but Lora Katzenback headed in a deflected corner kick in the 26th minute for the second goal.

Shantel Flanary scored from 25-yards out on a shot that just slipped under the bar in the 32nd minute, and again in the 38th minute on a cross.

Hair put the fifth goal in just before the halftime whistle, heading in another corner kick.

The lone bright spot for the Tigers came in the 42nd minute when KT Thomas put in a mid-range shot.

Mikale Wilkes scored the final goal, rebounded on a corner kick in the 46th minute.

"I felt like they were talented but I didn't know they had this in them," said Lahargoue. "I see their individual potential and I still think we can play better. I'm not satisfied by any means but I'm happy."

Flanary, who scored 11 goals last season, scored her seventh and eight goals of the season on Tuesday, maintaining her average of two goals per game.

The Knights have been the highest scoring team in 5A during the preseason, averaging nearly six goals per game.
