WASHINGTON — Taylor Twellman, the reigning league MVP, scored in the fourth minute, and Matt Reis made eight saves Sunday to lead the Revolution to a 1-0 victory in the Eastern Conference final, earning New England a second consecutive appearance in the MLS championship game.
New England will play Houston in next weekend's MLS Cup in Frisco, Texas. It will be the Revolution's third appearance in the title game; they lost to the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2002 and again last year.
United controlled the run of play and outshot New England 18-6.
Freddy Adu was surprisingly removed by the United for a substitute in the 65th minute.
The Revolution's only shot on goal found the net. It was the sixth career playoff goal for Twellman, and his second in this year's postseason.
DYNAMO 3, RAPIDS 1: Paul Dalglish scored twice in the first half and Brian Mullan added a goal in the 71st minute to help Houston advance to the MLS Cup with a victory over Colorado in the Western Conference final.
Though this is the first season for the Dynamo, the squad is made up primarily of players and coaches from the San Jose Earthquakes, the MLS champion in 2001 and 2003.
Jovan Kirovski's goal in the third minute after a hand ball by Adrian Serioux gave Colorado a 1-0 lead. Dalglish tied it in the 10th minute on a goal from inside 5 yards.
Dalglish put the Dynamo ahead in the 20th minute on a header in the middle off a pass from Brad Davis. Mullan also got an assist on the play.
