Utah Valley
ACADEMICS: Men's basketball player Matt Peterson has earned honorable mention recognition for academic excellence. Peterson had a Fall GPA of 3.42 and was named the Utah Valley State scholar athlete in January. Peterson, a business management major, played and started in all 29 games and averaged 29.8 minutes and 11.2 points per game.
SOFTBALL: Kam Mickolio was named Division-I Independent Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday after last week's four-hit shutout at Nevada. Mickolio, a senior, struck out five Wolfpack batters in the 5-0 win and became the first opposing pitcher to throw a shutout in the 19-year history of Nevada's Peccole Park. (Four pitchers from Stanford combined to shut out Nevada in 2005.) The shutout is the second for Mickolio, who stopped Sacramento State 8-0 in March.
Weber State
BASKETBALL:Jamaine Nance, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound guard from Central Florida Community College in Ocala, Fla., has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Wildcats and new head coach Randy Rahe next season. This past season, Nance averaged 13.0 points per game, helping his team win the Mid-Florida Conference championship. He shot 49.2 percent from the 3-point line during conference play and 42 percent for the entire season. He also shot 78 percent from the free-throw line.
TRACK: Distance runners Bret Ferrier and Sariah St. Laurent have been named the Big Sky Conference track athletes of the week, the league announced Tuesday. Ferrier, a junior from Winnemucca, Nev., and St. Laurent, a sophomore from Oceanside, Calif., picked up the honors after their performance last week at the Oregon Invitational.

TRACK: Eric Hendricks was named Mid-Con men's athlete of the week Tuesday for his performances at Utah State last Saturday. Hendricks picked up an event victory in the 400-meters by clocking an altitude-adjusted time of 47.43, which just missed qualifying him for the NCAA regionals and was the second-fastest individual time ever run at SUU.
Utah
SOFTBALL: The University of Utah softball team (28-14, 7-3 Mountain West Conference) continues its 10-game homestand with five games this weekend. The Utes play doubleheaders with conference rivals New Mexico (today) and Colorado State (Saturday) before hosting a single non-league game with New Mexico State (Sunday). First pitch for the Friday and Sunday games is 1 p.m., while the Saturday twin bill begins at noon. All games are at Ute Field.
SWIMMING & DIVING: Head coach Michael Litzinger has announced the addition of 10 new student-athletes. Local athletes to sign include Bryan Edmunds (Weber HS), Kathryn Maasberg (Skyline HS), Kelly McIntyre (Park City) and Annie Van Leeuwen (Cyrus HS).
TENNIS: The Mountain West Conference Championship men's quarterfinal match between No. 4 seed Utah and No. 5 seed UNLV was suspended due to rain. The match will resume at 10 a.m. PDT toiday at Barnes Tennis Center.
BYU
WOMEN'S TENNIS: No. 2 seed BYU posted a 4-0 victory over No. 7 seed Colorado State in the Mountain West Conference tennis championship quarterfinals Thursday at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. The Cougars will face No. 3 UNLV, which defeated Utah 4-0.
