PROVO — Joining the list of clothing stores for the family on a budget is Susie's Deals, a California-based chain of 90 stores in California, Nevada, Arizona and now Utah.
Susie's has opened in Provo at 2250 N. University Parkway.
The store features clothing, particularly sportswear, for $5 or less.
The story behind the store is described by one of its owners as a kind of "rags-to-riches" fairy tale. Susie's Deals was co-founded in 1974 by Susie Hyman and her three brothers, Stephen, Howard and David. According to Susie, they started their business by selling blue jeans and other items at swap meets. They all believe in catering to the entire family on a budget. The stores offer junior, missy, plus size, men's and children's apparel.
"Much of Susie's Deals success lies in the company's understanding that customers are tired of paying exorbitant prices for sportswear," said Stephen Hyman. "We have always been a competitive family, but now the family is more interested in winning the fight with the giant retailers."
Just how can these folks get name brand clothing and sell it for $5? Susie Hyman is able to offer the best prices because she buys overages and canceled orders.
"We maintain good relationships with manufacturers, which is why they call us first when they have goods," she said. "Our volume speaks for itself."
Stores that cater to the parent's pocketbook aren't new to the area. Moms and dads looking for good deals on clothing can shop stores like Kid to Kid, Plato's Closet, The Children's Orchard, Savers and Deseret Industries — all offering budget prices on well-kept but previously worn apparel.
Susie's offers a low price on never-been-worn apparel.
Susie's Deals has opened three other Utah locations: 1933 N. 2000 West, Clinton; 8085 W. 3500 South, Magna; and 10557 South Redwood Rd., South Jordan.
