Charles Mark Chesnutwood 1916 ~ 2006 Clayton, NC, formerly of South Jordan - Dr. Charles Mark Chesnutwood, 90, went to live with our Father-in-Heaven December 30, 2006. At the time of his death, he was living in Clayton, North Carolina with his daughter Nancy Carr, her husband John, and granddaughter Erin. Mark was born May 6, 1916 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to Charles and Anna Elizabeth Chesnutwood. He married Betty Ellen Maples on Oct. 17, 1942 in Chattanooga, TN. Mark led a very fascinating life and one that was full of adventure, and exciting challenges. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Throughout his lifetime, he held numerous Branch, Ward, and Stake positions. His passion was genealogy, and he worked tirelessly in the German Extraction Program for many years. Mark and Betty served on a full time welfare mission to Lima, Peru. He earned his doctorate degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1954, was a Captain in the US Army during World War II, taught school, coached high school sports, was an intelligence officer for the CIA, an engineer, and an Aerospace Technologist with NASA. Mark is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Anna Elizabeth Chesnutwood, brothers John, Paul, and Joseph Chesnutwood, sister Ruth Chesnutwood Knipe, and grandson Stephen Mark Carr. He is survived by his daughters Joyce Johnson of Neosho, Missouri; and Nancy Carr of Clayton, North Carolina; eight grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Fri., January 5, at 11:00 a.m. at the River Ridge 8th Ward, on 10200 S. 1300 West. Visitation for friends and family will begin one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be with Betty in the Utah Veterans Memorial Park, 17111 So. Camp William Rd., Bluffdale, Utah. Funeral Directors Broomhead Funeral Home.
