MURRAY — Dr. Ernst J. Eichwald, an internationally known University of Utah professor of pathology, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007, at his home in Murray. He was 94.
Known for his pioneering research in tissue transplantation and genetic factors influencing transplant rejection, Dr. Eichwald conducted research and taught at the U. for more than 40 years — including 11 spent as chairman of the department of pathology. Despite a semi-retirement in 1979, he still continued to perform laboratory work until 2003.
Medicine wasn't Dr. Eichwald's only passion — he was also a talented musician. He played the viola throughout medical school in various chamber groups consisting of teachers and fellow students, and founded a community orchestra in Great Falls, Mont.
Dr. Eichwald's extensive work in the field of tissue transplantation led him to organize the first international transplantation conference. He also founded the scientific journal Transplantation, which he edited for 30 years, and was chairman of the Transplantation Committee of the National Academy of Sciences from 1955 to 1967.
